Insomniac Games finally showcased Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ gameplay in an exciting extended sequence that aired during the recent PlayStation showcase.
It primarily features a large bridge battle that sees Miles face a well-equipped group of thugs who clearly know Daft Punk’s costume designers. Most of the combat will likely feel familiar to anyone who played Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, as we see Miles utilize a combination of melee attacks and spider skills to take down his foes. Eagle-eyed fans may spot a few new abilities, but the basic flow of this action sequences really hammers home that this is more of a large expansion than a fully-fledged sequel.
That’s not to say that there’s nothing new. It’s clear that Miles is moving on with his life since the events of the previous game, and we even catch a glimpse of what seems to be his new home in Harlem. There are also a few little touches (most notably the music and, again, a couple of fresh abilities) that subtly showcase the ways that Insomniac is using the style of their new star to incorporate a few fresh ideas.
Visually, the sequence looks impressive. While it’s pretty clear that the first wave of PS5 games won’t fully showcase what the PlayStation 5 will eventually be capable of, Miles Morales does offer glimpses at the console’s ray tracing abilities, steady frame rate, promises, and other technological wonders. The PS5’s biggest advantage (its incredible SSD) likely won’t be on full display until we get a good look at the game’s open-world sequences, but everything we’ve seen thus far suggests that Miles Morales will be one of the PS5’s smoothest early experiences.
